Las 9 Cartas

Nine values, one path

These 9 values are universal, but each of us lives them and orders them in our own way. They all matter, but they don’t all weigh the same.

There is one we feel is unquestionable: the one that identifies us most and with which we most represent ourselves. If we lost it, we would be in serious trouble. You probably already know which one is yours.

Sometimes, to be true to one value, we have to prioritize it over another, and they come into conflict. Telling the truth may cost me my peace. Being fair demands a courage I’m not sure I have. That conflict must be minimized: finding a way to honor both and, if one has to give way, acknowledging what we leave behind.

Moreover, every value has its opposite. Naming them, and recognizing what we feel with one and with the other, is the first step to writing a letter from the heart.

Humility / Pride

Humility is knowing who I am without needing to prove it: recognizing that no one gets there alone and that asking for help doesn’t make me less. It leaves gratitude and serenity. Pride is believing I need no one. It places me above everyone and leaves me alone, rigid and afraid of showing myself.

Resilience / Victimhood

Resilience is falling down and getting up, different but whole. It’s not enduring in silence, it’s letting yourself be helped and finding meaning even in what hurts. It leaves hope and a serene pride. Being a victim of something is not a choice, but settling into that role is: victimhood leaves me in complaint and self-pity, without seeing what I can still do.

Freedom / Slavery

Freedom is being able to choose who I want to be and how I want to love, and making sure others can do so too. It feels like lightness, joy and authenticity. Slavery is living tied to what people will say, to others or to my own fears. It is a borrowed life that overwhelms and fills with resentment.

Justice / Injustice

Justice is love made equity: giving each person what they deserve, even when it costs me. It brings balance and respect. Injustice denies someone what they deserve. Those who suffer it feel invisible, and those who see it are left with indignation, anger and helplessness.

Integrity / Hypocrisy

Integrity is when what I think, feel, say and do speak the same language, even when no one is watching. It’s sleeping peacefully, with peace and dignity. Hypocrisy is wearing a different face for every occasion. It’s exhausting, because you have to remember who you are with each person, and it leaves guilt and shame.

Empathy / Indifference

Empathy is putting myself in your place with all five senses: looking at you, listening to you and staying by your side without trying to fix you. It awakens tenderness and closeness. Indifference is walking past someone else’s pain. It makes no noise, but it is one of the most silent forms of loneliness.

Peace / War

Peace is being calm inside even when there’s a storm outside, and knowing how to get through conflicts without breaking anything. It leaves rest and fulfillment. War can be against others or against oneself: the war of resentment, self-demand or guilt that won’t switch off. It leaves us tense and exhausted.

Courage / Cowardice

Courage is doing what matters even when my hands shake. It’s not having no fear, it’s not letting fear drive. It gives determination and vitality. Cowardice is letting fear decide and staying silent about what had to be said. You pay for it later with a “what if I had done it…”, and it leaves shame and regret.

Trust / Distrust

Trust is giving myself without guarantees that you, life and I myself are not going to fail. It is the faith that sustains hope and tells me that, whatever happens, I will find the way out. It gives security and relief. Distrust is living on the defensive, looking for the catch in everything. It protects from disappointments, but also from hugs.
